Hurricane Katrina: The Financial Impact on Insurers and the Implications for the Industry

In a new white paper, the Tillinghast and Reinsurance businesses of Towers Perrin estimate that direct industry losses from Hurricane Katrina will be in the range of $40 billion to $55 billion making this tragic event the largest insurance loss from a natural disaster in U.S. history.

Once again, we are reminded that, even with advance warning, we may not be fully prepared. The massive losses from Katrina have created logistical and coverage problems that are sure to complicate the recovery process. And growing demographic concentrations mean that more record-breaking losses for everyone (including insurers) lie ahead.
